*Our capacity for astrological readings is 10. We accept these reservatiosn on a first-come, first-serve basis

We are graced to know Dhanurdhara Swami as a friend and spiritual mentor. When he is not in India, he will be offering monthly lectures at YOGAMAYA on Sunday evenings.

DDS is a dynamic speaker, filled with knowledge and depth of perspective. One of his great gifts is his ability to speak on high subjects in a way that is practical, relatable, and makes sense to the audience.

Whatever your level of spiritual knowledge, you will leave his programs feeling like you understand “Yoga” and its most important teachings in a powerful and useful way! Keep checking back in for his upcoming schedule at YOGAMAYA!

The Psychology of Karma:
Almost without exception all schools of classical Indian thought have at least one belief in common: they accept the law of karma, a divine arrangement of external events in order to help one grow spiritually. Dhanurdhara Swami will explain how our life experiences are a map of growth and source of blessings. We only need to learn how to understand and respond to them properly.

DD Swami will also clarify commonly misunderstood aspects of the law of karma, including:?

1) the co-existence of free will and destiny
2) the harmony between the Divine and the existence of suffering
3) Vedic astrology as a map of destiny? ?

To support the existence of the law of karma – that there is a destiny set at birth- Swami will give a short astrological reading describing some of the attendees’ general personality and life events.

If you are interested in participating in this activity, please send your date, exact time and place of birth to bryn@yogamayanewyork.com at least 10 days before the seminar.

Time restraints limit readings to the first five to ten people who sign up for the event.

The Environment of Consciousness
Dhanurdhara Swami is a lifelong scholar of the Bhagavad-gita.  In this satsang he will demonstrate how, based on Bhagavad-gita, one can make very simple choices in the make-up of his or her immediate environment to achieve greater clarity of perception, enhanced peace of mind, and improved self-control.

The ancients had a simple, but profound teaching: When we lack self-control, we fail. This is true with regard to our diet, our relationships, our career, and our spiritual disciplines, such as yoga. Simply put, a successful person learns to control their mind, rather than be controlled by it; this is the practice of yoga. The Bhagavad-gita is one of the main yogic texts. In its discussion of spiritual discipline, it not only gives an outline for the various methods of yoga, but also gives specific, comprehensive insight into how the quality of our environment affects the quality of our awareness. In the fourteenth chapter of the Bhagavad-gita, this knowledge is called “the supreme wisdom” and “the best of all knowledge”.

Mindful Yoga Workshop

Sankalpah Yoga Studio located at 254 Fifth Avenue in New York City is offering a wonderful workshop on mindful yoga this summer.  The event will combine yoga and meditation practices for any level student- great for beginners and advanced alike!

Mindful Yoga with Heather

Saturday, June 26
2:00-4:30pm

In this workshop, we will weave together the practices of yoga asana and mindfulness meditation. We will do this by bringing gentle awareness to our mind as we move through a slower, thoughtful flow of postures.
By practicing in this way, each asana reveals a unique opportunity for profound insight and transformation. This approach educates the mind to stay present to all that opens within us during our practice and opens up the potential for rapid progress in our physical practice.
We will begin the workshop with a discussion of philosophy and instruction on mindfulness meditation techniques. We will then move into a guided seated meditation before applying our awareness to a 90 minute yoga flow.

Beginning/Intermediate students welcome. The workshop is best for those with basic yoga experience, no meditation experience needed.
————
As a practitioner of Insight Meditation, Heather first came to yoga with a curiosity of the interconnectedness of the mind and body – after years of practice, yoga has become a meditation in itself. Heather is interested in the profound channels of healing that meditation and yoga tap into and the potential for complete wellness that the complimentary modalities offer through breath, movement and conscious transformation.

Yoga Union Center for Back Pain

Yoga For Scoliosis with Deborah Wolk
Sunday May 2   9:30 am-1:30 pm $70

The practice of yoga can help bring awareness to a spinal curvature and may relieve pain as well as slow the progression of scoliosis. A consistent yoga practice that specifically addresses the scoliosis with awareness and alignment will, in many cases, assure these results.

This workshop covers the anatomy of scoliosis and how it affects one’s body/mind and health. Ways of practicing and sequencing asana and use of props geared towards various curvatures and pain issues will be explored.

Anyone with scoliosis is encouraged to attend this workshop including people considering yoga as a therapeutic option. You may also learn how to safely practice yoga with your spinal fusion or Harrington Rod. It is especially recommended that yoga students attend with their teachers. One parent may accompany their child or teen with scoliosis without additional charge.

Deborah Wolk has presented her highly respected scoliosis workshops throughout the United States and in Europe since 2002.  The information and asana presented in the workshop is informed by her work with her own scoliosis as well as years of study with the most knowledgeable senior teachers working with scoliosis in the United States. Her workshops are known for presenting a wealth of clear, concise information that profoundly transform any yoga practice; from the uninitiated to the most advanced practitioner.

Deborah Is the Co-Director of Yoga Union Center for Backcare & Scoliosis

USING THE TRESSLER
A Mini-Workshop Series

Maximum 4 students per session $150 per session

The tressler is considered the premiere piece of therapeutic equipment by Iyengar teachers and the Iyengars themselves. Yet here in NYC the tressler often sits unused in class except occasionally to lean on. Like the wall ropes, the tressler can offer support, traction, proprioceptive information and engagement of the limbs like no other prop can. And its use can be combined with wall ropes, the wall and every other prop in the studio! With knowledge of its use, you can take care of yourself in class when you have an injury or as a teacher work with students who do.

Saturdays January 23, February 20, March 20, April 10 9am-12pm

In this series you will explore many of the classic asana that are part of regular practice and experience how they a can be practiced with more precision and intelligence using the tressler.  Each session will explore a different category of pose. Because of the nature of the tressler, there will also be plenty of time to observe and assist your classmates as well as work on the tressler by yourself with highly individualized adjustments and modi?cations.

PART IV  April 10  Traction and Inversions.
Since the tressler is weightbearing you can hang from it, climb on it and stretch while suspended.  For the student with asymmetry, alignment or spinal compression, it offers one more form of the indispensible traction he or she needs.  In addition, learning the techniques for using the tressler in Sirsasana (headstand), traction and proprioception techniques in Sarvangasana (shoulderstand) and halasana will give you a foundation — just the beginning of all the ways you can line up the bones and create stability while safely practicing these challenging inversions.

Jivamukti Yoga Workshops

VINYASA KRAMA – THE CONSCIOUS LANGUAGE OF SEQUENCING YOGA POSTURES
Saturday March 20th from 6-8pm

A Sequencing Workshop for Yoga Teachers with Cassandra Rigney
“The word vinyasa means ‘a joining or linking mechanism.’  Krama means ‘the process’; it refers to the succession of changes that occurs from moment to moment.  Vinyasa krama means the succession of changes undertaken with a single pointed intention, free from fluctuation.” – Jivamukti Yoga, Chapter 8

Cassandra is an Advanced Certified Jivamukti Yoga Teacher known for her challenging sequences and fluid transitions.  In this workshop you will learn the meaning of rhythm and movement by understanding the language of sequencing and how to consciously choose asana combinations that will encourage the body to unfold to its full potential while at the same time honoring the safety of the student.
There is no randomness in the original Jivamukti sequences designed as a blueprint by Jivamukti founders Sharon Gannon and David Life, nor are they choreographed. Each one is designed to flow perfectly into the other, taking the body from one state to the other and back again, and maximizing the release of energy within the body. We will serve our students best if we learn  to maximize their experience of asana.

There are many things to consider when sequencing asana; are you building a class or just putting in random poses?  Are your inhales and exhales coordinated with the proper movement?  Are you sacrificing proper alignment in order to sequence?  Do you incorporate seamless transitions into your sequences? These topics and many others will be covered in the workshop, which will revolve around a class as an example of Vinyasa Krama.

All yoga teachers  are welcome as well as those interested in learning about sequencing.

RELAX, RENEW AND RESTORE-A HOLISTIC RESPONSE TO STRESS
with Jivamukti Yoga teacher Jeff Brown
Sunday March 21st from 6 to 8:30 pm

The pace and rhythm of our culture, coupled with life’s challenges, can produce a cascade of stress hormones in the brain that have many effects on the body. Some of these effects can have a negative impact on the immune system leading to an increased risk of disease and emotional imbalance.  Come join Jeff Brown to learn how through mindfulness we can shift from a stress reaction to a relaxation response followed by an immersion that will help reset the body’s natural rhythm and neurological patterns.  Using yoga asana, active and restorative, pranayama, mindfulness meditation and aromatherapy, Jeff will help you drop into a state of deep relaxation and awareness of the present moment so essential for the body-mind to restore its natural rhythm, balance and joy.
