Inversions Series The Handstand with Julie Wilcox

Date: Thu   2/4/2010
Time:  6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
In these two hour workshops Julie will guide you through a one hour-long preparatory practice for the inversion of the day.Your practices will incorporate flow as well as holding postures while emphasizing the opening of your shoulders and upper back. You will also focus on using your core and legs as you move through each asana, which will translate directly to engaging them properly when inverted. Then during the second hour, will spend time teaching the specific principles of the individual posture of the evening. You will practice the posture from the simpler to more advanced variations. Julie will offer information about the physiological, psychological, emotional, and spiritual benefits of this group of poses as well as those that are specific to each pose.

The Handstand: The feeling of true and total homeostasis can be felt when a balance in this posture is achieved. In this workshop you will work on how to approach a handstand practice from the entry point, and then how to balance once up. You will have the option to explore variations of entry such as jumping and pressing as well as variations in the balance such as hanuman and scorpion.

For all postures, Julie hopes that many of you will experiment with moving away from the wall. She will make sure that in transitioning to the middle of the room, you understand the principles behind falling out of the pose with ease and grace.

*These workshops are not recommended for those who have neck or shoulder injuries, high blood pressure, and glaucoma or other eye issues. If you have any other condition and are not sure if you can do this workshop, please do not hesitate to ask!

Yoga for Depression with Kristin Leal
Date: Thu   2/25/2010
Time:  6:30 PM – 8:30 PM
Yoga for Depression with Kristin Leal

Over 25 million Americans are treated with antidepressants each year and millions more admit that they are depressed. The entire practice of yoga is to experience ourselves as the jivamuktin – the awakened soul in this life. If you are not living fully you will be in some fashion depressed, and our practice is designed to bring about our liberation.

In this workshop we will begin to discuss the complex interplay between the brain and endocrine, nervous, and immune systems which all contribute to our emotional well-being. We will explore practical, concrete tools drawing from yoga philosophy, asana, pranayama, diet, and supplements to begin to clear away the fog of depression and help reveal the sattvic state of healing and peace.

Kristin Leal is a 500+ ERYT having completed numerous teacher trainings with Adrienne Burke (a senior Jivamukti teacher), Rodney Yee, and Betsey Downing Ph.D. In 1995, she graduated from the Swedish Institute for massage therapy and became a licensed massage therapist and Reiki practitioner. She has led many workshops and teacher trainings around the city and in 2005 Kristin created the Kaya Yoga teacher training and an advanced anatomy series to share her passion for the miracle of the human body and the liberating potential of movement.

She is a co-author of the book, The Yoga Fan which has been reviewed as being an indispensable guide for the serious yoga student”. Kristin is currently working toward becoming a Doctor of Naturopathy and writing her second book, applying the ancient yoga philosophies to modern day relationships.

Kristin’s classes are a challenging mix of strong anatomical alignment and powerful vinyasa flow all while maintaining a sense of humor and a connection to the Divine. Her classes are influenced by everything from quantum physics to her new love of the trapeze but most of all the beautiful teachings of Alan Finger with whom she is honored to teach alongside.

A New Opportunity to Join the Teacher Training Program

 with Kadam Morten

The Teacher Training Program (TTP) is an ongoing program of in-depth study and practice based on the study of 14 of Geshe Kelsang’s books on sutra and tantra.

The Program is designed for those who wish to train as teachers of Mahayana Buddhism and/or wish to gain a profound and comprehensive understanding of Dharma.

As the study of Geshe Kelsang Gyatso’s book Mahamudra Tantra is about to begin, now is an ideal time to join the TTP.  Classes take place on Tuesday and Friday evenings from 6:30 to 9:00pm.

Introduction to the Teacher Training Program

For those who are considering joining, Kadam Morten will give an introduction to the TTP. He will explain the purpose and commitments of studying on the TTP, how the classes are structured, how best to prepare, and so on. Attending this introduction is essential if you wish to join.

The actual study of Mahamudra Tantra will then commence on Tuesday January 26 at 6:30 pm.

About Connecting to the Divine Self within – the teachings of Bhagavad Gita in practice.

The soothing poetry of the Bhagavad Gita, or “the Song of God” has the power to awaken the true knowledge of the Self and the Divine Love.

Listening, reading, meditating – all are “roads” we travel searching for the Truth. Many scriptures say that the Truth, in form of the Original Sound–original vibration in space–gave birth to the creation of this world, the elements, the senses, all forms of living beings. Can we find that Original Sound reverberating in the “Song of God”, the Bhagavad Gita? What is to be found in the wisdom of these verses? Can you find your own story within its pages? We will meditate on the English translation – as well as the original Sanskrit text.

Karolina Zaleska is a long-time student of the Bhagavad Gita, the Bhagavata Purana as well as other Vedic texts. She has practiced reading and reciting the Sanskrit verses as well as the japa, or mantra meditation. We’ll discuss: What does a sleep schedule look like? Should I put my baby on a schedule? What can I do if my spouse comes home in the evening and riles up the baby? What if feel guilty asking my partner to help at night? Is it OK to rock my baby to sleep? My baby is 3 months old, can I still swaddle her? How do I cut down on night time feeding? Can I sleep with my baby?

A great discussion for moms with babies, ages newborn through one year. Join us with questions and opinions!

There will also be time for questions!

Terry is a certified childbirth educator. She uses her experience as a labor support doula, yoga instructor and mother to offer a well-rounded, accessible curriculum. As a doula, she has assisted couples through a very wide range of birth choices and experiences. It is her goal to teach the full spectrum of options a couple has when preparing for their birth, and then to support them unconditionally. The most important way to approach your birth is with confidence and relaxation. You achieve this by knowing what possible things to expect and by feeling prepared to respond positively to whatever your journey turns out to be.

Anna is a certified childbirth educator and birth doula, co-director of Birth Day Presence and a new mother. Anna has years of both counseling and teaching experience and became interested in childbirth after attending the birth of a close friend. She holds masters degrees in psychology and health education and is currently finishing her doctorate in health education at Columbia University.

Hear from some happy parents-to-be:

My husband and I took this class and absolutely loved it! After the course, we feel that we are ready to face any labor, birth, and even postpartum difficulties we might experience.

Terry was enthusiastic, knowledgeable, could answer every one of my questions (and I had a lot!) and just a phenomenal teacher all around!
