We are graced to know Dhanurdhara Swami as a friend and spiritual mentor. When he is not in India, he will be offering monthly lectures at YOGAMAYA on Sunday evenings.

DDS is a dynamic speaker, filled with knowledge and depth of perspective. One of his great gifts is his ability to speak on high subjects in a way that is practical, relatable, and makes sense to the audience.

Whatever your level of spiritual knowledge, you will leave his programs feeling like you understand “Yoga” and its most important teachings in a powerful and useful way! Keep checking back in for his upcoming schedule at YOGAMAYA!

The Psychology of Karma:
Almost without exception all schools of classical Indian thought have at least one belief in common: they accept the law of karma, a divine arrangement of external events in order to help one grow spiritually. Dhanurdhara Swami will explain how our life experiences are a map of growth and source of blessings. We only need to learn how to understand and respond to them properly.

DD Swami will also clarify commonly misunderstood aspects of the law of karma, including:?

1) the co-existence of free will and destiny
2) the harmony between the Divine and the existence of suffering
3) Vedic astrology as a map of destiny? ?

To support the existence of the law of karma – that there is a destiny set at birth- Swami will give a short astrological reading describing some of the attendees’ general personality and life events.

If you are interested in participating in this activity, please send your date, exact time and place of birth to bryn@yogamayanewyork.com at least 10 days before the seminar.

Time restraints limit readings to the first five to ten people who sign up for the event.

The Environment of Consciousness
Dhanurdhara Swami is a lifelong scholar of the Bhagavad-gita.  In this satsang he will demonstrate how, based on Bhagavad-gita, one can make very simple choices in the make-up of his or her immediate environment to achieve greater clarity of perception, enhanced peace of mind, and improved self-control.

The ancients had a simple, but profound teaching: When we lack self-control, we fail. This is true with regard to our diet, our relationships, our career, and our spiritual disciplines, such as yoga. Simply put, a successful person learns to control their mind, rather than be controlled by it; this is the practice of yoga. The Bhagavad-gita is one of the main yogic texts. In its discussion of spiritual discipline, it not only gives an outline for the various methods of yoga, but also gives specific, comprehensive insight into how the quality of our environment affects the quality of our awareness. In the fourteenth chapter of the Bhagavad-gita, this knowledge is called “the supreme wisdom” and “the best of all knowledge”.

Mindful Yoga Workshop

Sankalpah Yoga Studio located at 254 Fifth Avenue in New York City is offering a wonderful workshop on mindful yoga this summer.  The event will combine yoga and meditation practices for any level student- great for beginners and advanced alike!

Mindful Yoga with Heather

Saturday, June 26
2:00-4:30pm

In this workshop, we will weave together the practices of yoga asana and mindfulness meditation. We will do this by bringing gentle awareness to our mind as we move through a slower, thoughtful flow of postures.
By practicing in this way, each asana reveals a unique opportunity for profound insight and transformation. This approach educates the mind to stay present to all that opens within us during our practice and opens up the potential for rapid progress in our physical practice.
We will begin the workshop with a discussion of philosophy and instruction on mindfulness meditation techniques. We will then move into a guided seated meditation before applying our awareness to a 90 minute yoga flow.

Beginning/Intermediate students welcome. The workshop is best for those with basic yoga experience, no meditation experience needed.
————
As a practitioner of Insight Meditation, Heather first came to yoga with a curiosity of the interconnectedness of the mind and body – after years of practice, yoga has become a meditation in itself. Heather is interested in the profound channels of healing that meditation and yoga tap into and the potential for complete wellness that the complimentary modalities offer through breath, movement and conscious transformation.

What is Yogilates?

THE NEW YORK TIMES

CLASS IS IN SESSION

Stretching, Sliding, Bonding: A

Multitasking Mix

PILATES SYNERGY FLOW

The Sports Club/LA at 330 East 61st Street,

and the Reebok Sports Club, 160 Columbus Avenue.

$35 guest pass when accompanied by a member.

IS a six-pack a six-pack if it is hidden under fat? Pilates mat work may

strengthen core muscles, but the subtle moves that are often done lying

down don’t exactly burn a lot of calories. That’s why many fans, myself

included, supplement regular mat classes with cardiovascular exercise.

How else to fit into skinny jeans?

To hear Jonathan Urla tell it, Pilates devotees no longer need to squeeze

in cardio sessions on the side. Just take Pilates Synergy Flow, his

hourlong workout that offers the toning of Pilates bookended by a brisk

warm-up and a chaser of squats, lunges and arm work done at a heartthumping

pace. Four props also make the mat work far tougher than

when just body weight is used.

Weights, in particular, up the ante. After holding 2-pound dumbbells

midair while scissoring and circling the legs, my upper body ached the

next day, a rarity in mat work, which has few arm exercises. But

switching among a resistance band, a toning ring and two sets of weights

complicated transitions and ultimately slowed my heart rate.

The most breathless part of class involved squats and lunges with

dumbbells. No surprise there.

Patricia Bonitch, 27, who attends the class, explained the appeal of a

multitasking workout: “This way you get at least some cardio in, and you

get more of a workout from your Pilates.”

For me, 25 minutes of class time devoted to raising pulses wasn’t quite

long enough to skip my jog the next morning, but I did take a shortcut.
